3 Foods to Enjoy this Winter
You know the feeling… the days are darker, your energy is a little lower, and you may be moving just a tiny bit slower. The dreaded doldrums of these winter days can feel insurmountable at times!
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, food therapy (known as Shi Lao) is a core part of treatment, and a pretty yummy way to combat those blues. I mean, the concept of “food as medicine” is as commonplace as “puppies are cute” in our world.
But, knowing WHAT to eat and WHEN to eat it can rev up your food’s healing potential! During the Winter months, we can gain the most benefit through eating root veggies + foods that have richer and darker colours.
Here are a few of our seasonal favs:
🟣 FIGS: The purple goodies are basically a multivitamin — but tastier! They are a source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron + Vitamins A and K, and studies have shown they can have anti-carcinogenic effects on the body. PRO TIP: Pair your figs with a little goat cheese. ‘Nuff said.
🟣 PURPLE POTATOES: Winter is all about moving inwards, and storing energy — which is where potatoes thrive! Eating these root veggies during the winter months can help support your digestive system, and provide a healthy dose of antioxidants. PRO TIP: Pair these potatoes with some rosemary + lemon for a taste of sunshine.
🟣 BEETS: A personal fav, these sweet treats are a perfect winter treat. Not only do they support cognitive function, they can also strengthen your immune system to keep you healthy all winter long. PRO TIP: While beets can be enjoyed raw or cooked, eating them warm is best for optimal digestion during the winter months.
